"Nirvana" is a kinetic sound installation that intertwines the wisdom of Buddhism with the pulse of modern technology. At the heart of Buddhist philosophy lies the pursuit of Nirvana—a transcendent state of enlightenment where individual desires and sufferings dissolve. Traditionally, this pursuit involves meditation and practice, guided by the rhythmic beats of the "Wooden Fish"—a percussion instrument integral to East Asian Mahayana Buddhist rituals, used to maintain rhythm and awareness during spiritual practices.
Nirvana employs physical computing to synchronize the sound of 96 Wooden Fish, which have been placed in a matrix on six angled wall panels. Each Wooden Fish has a mallet driven by a DC motor, simultaneously hitting it to create a profound sound. This represents a unique reinterpretation of Buddhism's timeless teachings, creating an immersive environment where the spiritual and technological converge, encouraging the audience to engage in a profound meditative experience and become a part of this religious experience.
